During the 2009-2010 school year, our SAP team facilitated a total of 16 support groups to approximately 60 of our WASE students.
General Information
Group participation is voluntary
Groups are held once a week for 30-40 minutes during the school day
All groups will be facilitated by a SAP team member (all SAP team members have been trained in group facilitation)
Groups will last no longer than 8 weeks
Students will be divided into two groups: Primary (Grades 1-3) and Intermediate (Grades 4-5)
Depending on the number of students referred, some students may be placed on a waiting list
Groups must consist of a minimum of 4 students
Students may only participate in one group at a time
Parent permission is required for participation
For the 2010-2011 school year, the following support groups will be offered based upon student needs: Anger Busters: This group will teach students about the differences between healthy and unhealthy anger, how to identify triggers, and strategies for coping with anger in appropriate ways.
Banana Splits: This group is designed for students whose families are experiencing a recent change, such as separation or divorce. The group will focus on identifying and sharing feelings associated with family changes as well as strategies for coping. Friendship Group: This group will help students learn how to create and maintain healthy friendships. Topics will address how to handle common friendship conflicts such as teasing, peer pressure, as well as how to increase appropriate friendship behaviors. This group will also be offered to kindergarten students. Grief and Loss: This group is designed to create a peer community of support for students who are coping with the loss of a loved one. Activities will focus on the stages of normal grieving, honoring the memory of the deceased, and strategies for dealing with feelings associated with grief. Concerned Persons: This group is designed to provide a support system for children who are experiencing addiction within the family environment. Sunshine Club: This group is designed for students who are struggling with a terminal illness of a parent and/or caregiver. Study Skills: This group is designed to help students learn organizational skills, as well as how to increase their attention and focus when given particular tasks and/or activities.I'm Special: A group for students to enhance their self-confidence. This group is designed specifically for 1st and 2nd grade students. Girl Talk: This group is designed specifically for 4th and 5th grade girls in order to cope with the struggles unique to becoming a pre-teen. Attention Parents: If you are interested in referring your child to a student support group, please complete the following form and return it to the Student Assistance Counselor.
Attention Faculty: If you are interested in referring a student to a student support group, the following needs to be completed: The parent/guardian needs to be contacted regarding the intent to refer the child to a student support group and the SAP Referral needs to be completed.
